Capital for Just Futures
Capital for Powerbuilding
CJF leverages capital power to resource movements and communities subjected to decades of economic violence and systemic divestment. We organize capital to redirect resources from extractive systems into community institutions and movement infrastructure.

What is Capital?
Capital is the investment power that turns bold visions of just futures into real, lasting structures that resource our communities. It bridges vision and reality.
In traditional contexts, capital is reduced to financial assets and vehicles, often structured in ways that extract value from communities to generate returns elsewhere. We advocate for investments in real community assets and structure capital to flow back, not out — regenerating value and underwriting just futures.
The Challenge
How do we unlock our Capital power and free our communities from the chokehold of extractive Economies?
For more than 25 years, our communities have been treated as sites of extraction rather than accumulation. Through divestment, criminalization, and economic violence, capital has been pulled outward instead of reinvested inward, while wealth has concentrated at historic levels among those who benefit from that extraction. The result is that communities generate value but do not retain it, and just futures are imagined but rarely resourced at scale to bring to life.

This pillar builds a Just Futures capital structuring framework for investing into seeding, sustaining, and scaling BAMEMSA powerbuilding ecosystems across the nonprofit and for-profit sectors. It centers on direct consultation with BAMEMSA communities and movement institutions impacted by state violence to construct the capital structure and investment vehicles required to institutionalize power across multiple generations.

This pillar advances democratic ownership as a core strategy for wealth-building and power-building. In partnership with BCI, MJF has launched Cooperative Futures, the first program in the country to combine guaranteed income with worker-owned cooperative business incubation.

This pillar tests movement-controlled capital in practice. Over the next three years, through MJF’s Social Impact Venture Fund, we will deploy catalytic early-stage capital to social movement leaders and mission-driven entrepreneurs who traditional markets and philanthropy fail to invest in.

Through campaigns focused on intentional purchasing, spending, and boycotts, MJF will be supporting the use of spending power as a form of powerbuilding

Supporting and engaging community businesses and movement organizations through resource cultivation, canvassing, outreach, and efforts to ensure existing institutions are informed and have information on capital and financial access, and other critical rights and movement fortification.
